Beware of Aquenters with Knives

If you're a pumpkin.

We held our annual Pumpkin Slaughter last night and oh how the flesh and seeds went flying. Did the expensive Martha Stewart pumpkin carving kit help? How about the accessory kit?

There were lessons learned (Tony found out if you mess up one side of the pumpkin, there's another side for the cutting), pizza eaten (Rocco's!), and a few glasses of wine, beer, and sparkling apple cider downed.

Believe it or not we got home in time to do last minute touches on our Halloween costumes and stand in line with everyone else to buy non-Pirate related candies at Ralph's.

We'd love your opinion on this year's contest. (Please remember, almost no one at our office went to Art School.)

The online poll is below.

Without further ado.....

Roll & Rocktober

HOT (ROCKS) TALENT

Can Rocktober be over already?

Sadly, yes.

Which means that Christmas and Hanukkah are only 56 and 54 days away, respectively.

Something you'll be reminded of every time you shop, open your e-mail, or talk to your mother.

But who, exactly, will remind you that soon many of your staff will be taking vacations?

How about us?

This holiday season, don't forget about Aquent and our spectacular Talent when the decorations come out and the cubicles are empty.

A there's still a few days to call us for one last listen of our Classic Rock hold music (we won't be long).

Deck them halls!

"Major Tom to Ground Control"

Congratulations on your purchase of a new RockStar In-Vehicle Safety and Security System. We hope that you find our service easy to understand and potentially life saving to use!

Using revolutionary technology, RockStar provides you with the latest road, weather, and hazard information as well as real-time, 24/7 assistance. Just press the red RockStar button and you'll be connected to a well-trained, knowledgeable RockStar Advisor ready to help.

Where else are you be able to get valuable in-car assistance from rock legends like Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep), Rikki Rockett (Poison), Ben Sidran (Steve Miller Band), and Neal Doughty (R.E.O. Speedwagon)?

Only with RockStar!

We thank you for your patronage and look forward to providing years of rockin' good service!

---------

The following services may be available depending on your RockStar Package Level.

SERVICE: Automatic Notification of Air Bag Deployment

DESCRIPTION: In the event your air bags deploy, your vehicle will send a signal to a RockStar Advisor.

BENEFIT: A RockStar Advisor will contact you and inquire whether you need assistance. If the RockStar cannot hear you because he is at a loud bar, club, or amphitheatre, you may need to hold the line while he makes his way to a quiet place outside where he can talk/smoke.

In cases where you cannot answer the RockStar Advisor's inquiries because you just hit your larynx on the air bag, you may have to wait a few moments while he continues shouting, "Who IS THIS? Sidney, is that you? Come on, answer! Dude, this is NOT funny!!!" and finally figures out that it is indeed an emergency call. At this point, your RockStar Advisor will pack up their stuff and use the GPS to try to locate you and your vehicle. (Service unavailable by RockStar Advisors who have had their licenses revoked.)

SERVICE: Remotely Locking/Unlocking Door

DESCRIPTION: You lock your keys in the car and can't get back in.

BENEFIT: You'll have quick and easy entry into your vehicle. Just give the RockStar Advisor your secure PIN and they'll send a signal to unlock your door. (Please note that there may be a time lag while the RockStar Advisor tries to remember where he put the codebook containing PIN numbers.)

If you've forgotten to lock your doors once you're away from your vehicle, a RockStar Advisor can send a signal to lock them for you. (Keeping in mind, of course, that RockStars are extraordinarily forgetful and often cannot remember to pay rent, send birthday cards, or call their mothers. RockStar LLC is not liable for a RockStar Advisor forgetting to lock your car resulting in finding your vehicle stripped and up on blocks.)

SERVICE: Emergency Situations

DESCRIPTION: If you find yourself or another person in a situation where you need immediate assistance from police, fire, or emergency medical services (EMS), simply press the red emergency button.

BENEFIT: Your location information is transmitted and your call takes priority status on RockStar Advisor's screen. (However, if at the exact same time a pizza is arriving at the RockStar Advisor's front door or he is in the middle of a really good part of a DVD, this may take precedence over your emergency call. Do not panic, the Advisor will get to you as soon as the Pizza Guy is paid or the good part of the movie is over.)

SERVICE: Driving Directions

DESCRIPTION: Helpful RockStar Advisors with up-to-date computer maps are a great way to make sure you're headed in the right direction!

BENEFIT: Get directions without stopping. Upon your request, Advisors will use a global positioning system to locate your vehicle and give you clear(ish) directions to your destination or guidance to nearby motels, ATMs, seedy bars, all-night diners, and places to get a 20-foot,16-guage speaker cable at 3am. As many RockStar Advisors have previously been Pizza Delivery Men or Bicycle Couriers themselves, they know the shortcuts (both legal and through front yards) to get you where you're going quickly.

SERVICE: Ride Assistance

DESCRIPTION: Should you or your vehicle not be suitable for driving home, a RockStar Advisor will call a taxicab at your request.

BENEFIT: A (mostly) reliable way to make it home. If no cab is available, the RockStar Advisor or one of his out-of-work band mates will come pick you up in a van. Please do remember there may be some lag time if the RockStar Advisor is asleep or lapsing in and out of a drug-induced coma.

SERVICE: Stolen Vehicle Tracking

DESCRIPTION: If you determine that your vehicle has been stolen, RockStar will help the police determine its location. Contact a RockStar Advisor from your vehicle. Ooh, wait, your vehicle's been stolen. Right. We'll get back to you on this one.

BENEFIT: None yet.

SERVICE: RockStar Concierge

DESCRIPTION: Having trouble finding the perfect restaurant for a romantic interlude? A Zagat Guide might be your first choice, but if you're looking for a cheap place for burritos or one of those places that won't kick you out no matter how loud and inebriated your table gets, contact your RockStar Advisor for guidance that can't be found in any book.

BENEFIT: RockStar gives you the one source for rock recommendations and information for most major U.S. cities (in which your RockStar Advisor has personally toured). Sample inquiries include: Where's the best place to crash when your girlfriend kicks you out? What's the difference between a Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster? Where can you get chicken and waffles on the same plate? Only your RockStar Advisor knows for sure!

SERVICE: Roadside Assistance

DESCRIPTION: Whether you need gas, a tire changed or your car towed, a RockStar Advisor may contact help. Then again, they may not.

BENEFIT: Minor at best. This service really depends on the mood and sobriety of the Advisor at the time of the call. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience. You may want to consider also joining the Automobile Club.

Thank you for joining the many satisfied customers already using RockStar In-Vehicle Safety and Security System to help make life easier and a little more rockin'.

And if your vehicle is a minivan, you can use all the rock n' roll lifestyle you can get.

Remember, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a RockStar is only a button away.

Give or take 40 minutes.

Or so.

Longer Than...

1809020742_5df5298859.jpg

As long as we've been hosting the LA Aquent Talent Holiday Party, our NYC office has been throwing their Halloween Party.

Okay, longer.

10 years? 12 years?

You should check out this year's invite, created by an Aquent Talent.

Wow.

Looks like we'd better get ready now if we're going to have a better invite come December.

Enjoy!

Multichannel Marketing and Y.O.U.

When I was a kid in New Jersey, the night before Halloween was often spent pulling pranks around the neighborhood - this was called Mischief Night (not to be confused with Detroit's arson-laden Devil's Night).

Probably as a responsible Marketer, come October 30th you'll want to be doing something a little more responsible than TPing trees or creating a radio drama that alludes to an ongoing Martian invasion.

Which is why I suggest instead listening to Aquent's sponsored AMA Webcast on Multichannel Marketing with Akin Arikan, Senior Segment Manager for Internet marketing at Unica. Arikan is also the author of Multichannel Marketing, which is a book aimed at providing marketers "practical methods for integrating marketing metrics and actions across online and offline channels."

The Webcast "will guide you through how best to leverage cross-channel behavior analysis and overcome the online/offline chasm so you can improve customer-centric marketing and avoid common cross-channel marketing pitfalls."

And yes, if you attend, we promise to get you a free copy of the book.

Which is preferable to, say, a bag of flaming dog poo on your doorstep.

Just saying.

All the details are right here.

Being More Social

352439602_d22444b389.jpg

Our Interactive Team hosted a Social Networking Web Panel last week which was really interesting, and yes, there's something in it for you.

We'd invited Ann Glenn, Social Media Guru, to talk about... well, Social Media. (Because it would have been strange to have her talk on the current financial crisis, right?)

She's a Sr. Web Producer with over 15 years of experience developing interactive projects in the entertainment industry. She's created and implemented lots of social network programs for Sony Pictures Entertainment including Seinfeld, Spider-Man and Wheel of Fortune. She also manages web production for Sony Pictures Releasing International in support of countries such as Japan, United Kingdom and Australia.

Okay, that sounds kinda pitchy, but we're telling you, she's the real deal. (In fact, she gave this presentation recently to the folks at MIT.)

So here's what's in it for you: the presentation. Right here as a downloadable file. No, we didn't record her speaking. And yes, that would have been a good idea. But this is the next best thing, isn't it?

Here's the files:

Social Media Dictionary.pdf

Class_SocialNetworking.pdf

More info can be found on her site urlgrl.com.

I'll be Twittering you later.

Mmmm, It's War

40047-Campbell-Progresso_medium.jpg

Maybe it's just because I read the LA Times Food Section every Wednesday that I've noticed this other, non-computer related, war going on.

It started, it seemed, with a full page ad from Campbell's Select Harvest shown above, letting everyone know that this Progresso soup had MSG and theirs had none.

Soon there was a full page ad from Progresso, "Campbell's has 95 soups made with MSG.  Progresso has 26 delicious soups with no MSG (and more to come)."

Then one from Campell's.

Then one from Progresso?

Actually I sort of lost count because, sorry to inform both companies, I don't really eat soup.

In fact, in the years since I was daily chowing down Maruchan Ramen Noodles (aka The Lean Years), I've really come to think of canned soups as the food item that my grandmother would beat me for eating.

So no, once again this advertisement war is not working for me.

Maybe if you put my grandmother in the ad.

You can read about the whole battle at Food Quality News, if you so wish.

I'm wondering is it just Political Fever that driving all these smear campaigns?

What say you?

"Canned Heat"

As a Rocker Mom, my days are so busy that I just don't have time to slow down.

Whether I'm taking little Nigel to his guitar soloing lessons or visiting my husband in rehab, it just seems I'm always on the go!

But I insist on eating dinner at home, even if it's in front of the TV watching old concert footage of The Doors or reruns of The Osbournes.

That's why my family always gets SwanSong's Frozen Dinner Favorites.

You may remember Swan Song Records as the 70's label put together by members of Led Zeppelin.

Even though Led Zep may never get back together, guitarist Jimmy Page and vocalist Robert Plant have been "jamming" with top chefs to concoct some of the most delicious rock-based delights sure to fill up even the hungriest Roadie!

Who better to know the appetites of a hungry Rock n' Roll family than its most influential stars?

If your day is like mine, spent trucking equipment across town to stale-smelling bars and converted loft rehearsal spaces, the last thing you want to do at 6 o'clock is try to whip up a Pot Roast with Onions and Carrots for your hungry crew.

You must be mental.

Before we started eating SwanSong Frozen Dinner Favorites, my family didn't know we even had an oven much less that I could cook (or reheat) in it.

Now we spend many nights the dining room table discussing guitar licks and seven-minute drum solos with delicious offerings like:

Fretless Fried Chicken Dinner

Salisbury "Tube Steak Boogie" Dinner

"Two Outta Three Ain't Bad" Meatloaf

All Beef Angus "Young" Mini Cheeseburgers

Whole Lotta Spuds

Glazed and Cornfused Ham Dinner

Great Chops and Applesauce

Rock the Mic-aroni & Cheese

Yellow Submarine Sandwiches

Wok & Roll Over Broccoli and Beef

Breaded Chicken "Kharmagiana"

Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, & Prime Rib Dinner

Peas & Rice by the Dashboard Lights

Really Baked Alaska

And my family's absolute favorite:

Stairway to Heaven-ly Potatoes & Ham

I'm sure you and your family will think these dishes are hotter than a '64 Fender Stratocaster!

Why should you choose SwanSong when there are so many choices down the frozen food aisle?

When these two young Rock Gods weren't trashing hotel rooms or partying with groupies, they were in the kitchen (or on stage) whipping up delights like Shepherd's Pie and Chicken Roasted Over 500 Audience Lighters.

Is there a Rocker Mom out that doesn't trust that Jimmy Page and Robert Plant know what it takes to keep a hungry crowd yelling for more?

Plus, with each frozen meal you buy from SwanSong a donation will be made for Veggies for Rockers fund. V4R is a non-profit formed by Jimmy Page's wife and dedicated to introducing guitarists, drummers, bassists, and vocalists to vegetables of every color and creed.

How cool is that?

Hey, can YOUR frozen food company say that their CEO ends his board meetings by smashing his guitar to bits on the conference room table?

Not bloody likely!

Take it from me, a tattoo-wearing, muscle-car drivin' die-hard Rocker Mom; don't make taking care of your family turn you into a wimpy Hockey Mom...

Let SwanSong Frozen Dinner Favorites help you and your family kick out the jams and rock on!

You'd probably say we were great big liars.

And you'd be absolutely right.

Not only has our Finance Department refused to let us give away iPods, they keep telling us they won't pay for the ones we just bought for ourselves.

The nerve.

If you do happen to like iPods though, you'll love our Talent. All of whom hold well over 120 GB of information on everything from print production and top-shelf Web design to product development and project management.

That's better to put in your company's back pocket anyway, right?

Rock on!

Carolina G.
Brand Manager CPG

"Oh, Carolina, what great ideas you have!!"

That's what you'll be saying once you meet our newest Brand Manager, Carolina!

Most recently at Proximo Spirits, she was responsible for developing brand strategy for two of their major tequilas, 1800 Tequila and Gran Centenario. When Carolina first joined the team the products weren't doing as well as she thought they could, particularly 1800 Tequila. The problem was how to make the branding more exciting and more relevant to today. Carolina took this challenge head on by repositioning the brand, creating a brand plan, conducting qualitative research, and using art as a platform. As a result 1800 Tequila became to be known as the renegade Tequila and sales grew!

Her successes and skills go on and on. With companies such as Revlon, Unilever Home & Personal Care, Atkins Nutritionals, and Seagram's Spirits & Wine Group under her belt, she's bound to revamp and energize your brands by applying her knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research, innovations, and market sizing perspectives.

She's managed budgets as large as $9.5 million, is energetic, smart...

And ready to join your team!!

Fight!

184619251_e447a662f7.jpg

I'm man enough, my friend, to admit my wife KO'd me twice last night in Wii Boxing (perhaps, though, not man enough to let you know how our Wii Tennis match turned out).

Maybe it's just that we're all under siege from both political parties and various Vote No and Vote Yes groups, but I have no idea why Apple and Microsoft have gotten into an ad war that looks like a McCain v. Obama shootout.

Microsoft launches Windows campaign with Jerry Seinfeld

Then pulls them

Microsoft launches their "I'm a PC" ads, complete with appearances from Eva Longoria and Deepak Chopra (Really? Deepak Chopra? They chose Deepak Chopra?) in obvious answer to Apple's "I'm a Mac ads".

Well, now Apple counters with their own take on the $300M ad campaign by Microsoft

Media Bistro says "Clearly, the above Apple spot completely undoes the $300 million project, in one swift kick to the nards."

I can't say I agree. I use both PC and Mac and, well, they both have their issues (I'm not currently a fan of Vista, which I use at home), but are these ads really going to make me lean one way or another?

I don't know about you, but when I bought my last computer there was much more to consider than what my OS "said" about me.

How about:

Cost of system

Whether or not useful applications are included in the software bundle (Word & Excel, anyone?)

Ease of use

Look and size of system

Ease of switching platforms

There are some programs which just aren't Mac compatible (which is why I have to use Parallels at work, which is painful) and many things about a Mac are just easier to use.

I see none of these points outlined in these ads.

But maybe they're just marketing the Brand Experience.

I guess if it sells their OS, then I guess they've done their job?

When you're wrong you're wrong?

A few days ago I said that I didn't believe in those design forums where a bunch of anonymous people pick apart a logo, illustration, ad campaign, etc.

Well, apparently everyone else loves the idea.

How do I know? Because Creative Pro's forum about the new Michaels logo got such a great response that they're now showcasing the new Sears logo.

poll_logos_20081013.jpg

Am I just missing something here in the very opinionated Web world? (I heard Adam Carolla say today that YouTube is essentially the equivalent of a high school girls' bathroom. If you did it and don't want it to get out there, too bad. Someone's already filmed and posted your mistake.)

I'm hoping some of you Creatives out there could give me some input. Maybe I'm totally off here.

Comments and your votes are welcomed!

Post Script - I got this comment from one of the Aquent HQ Creatives:

"Hey, I saw your blog post on commenting on logos. And yes, it helps me in design. Its like when you show your design teacher something and he tells you what he thinks. I'd much rather hear what the rest of the design world thinks of certain designs, than people who don't know design. Because in the end, it's a tougher audience.

Here's a site I read daily."

Sure enough, Creatives seem to be leaning toward these being helpful. Maybe a) Designers are different than Writers or b) it's all just me.

I'll get back to you.

Do you think people voicing their opinions about logos, campaigns, etc. on Websites helps Creatives and the creative world?

My Abode or Your Adobe?

2883021274_4365f5733c.jpg

Well, it turns out Adobe is ready to send CS4 out the door.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct 15, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the immediate availability of the Adobe(R) Creative Suite(R) 4 product family, the highly-anticipated release of industry-leading design and development software for virtually every creative workflow.

If you don't yet have the cash and are dying to see how the whole shebang works, you may want to sign up for AIGA/LA's Adobe run presentation on November 5th.

Adobe product trainer, Kelly McCathran, will teach designers, developers, and production artists alike the design flexibility, technical efficiency and creative potential of this revolutionary new tool set.

A mere $25 for non-members, it's much, much cheaper than buying the whole thing and then deciding you don't like it.

Not that I'm insinuating you won't like it.

Details here.

Post Script: Sharon just sent me this info on another CS4 look through on Tuesday, October 21:

An Evening with Adobe Production Premium for Professional Animators

Join us when MICHAEL COLEMAN and GILES BAKER* will be showcasing some of the great features in CS4.  If you're a veteran user, you know Michael and Giles.  If not - now is your chance to meet them in person.

Show up early!  Doors will open at 6:30, but we'll have free tasty tapas to eat for those who show up early.  Plus, we'll be handing out some limited edition collector stickers for the CS4 family. Bring cash for beer and sangria!

Free, courtesy of DMA/LA and Adobe. You can sign up for a free membership online.

Event info is here.

The People Have Spoken!

Sometimes I wonder if online design forums are good or bad. Or are they just like another small town city council meeting gone astray?

CreativePro ran a forum last week about the new logo for the arts and crafts store Michaels (which replaced their very dated logo). It's really just a display of the logos, a "what do you think?", and 48 differing opinions on the logos, ranging from "Much better than the original, but still needs some work" to "Obviously proves my point made many times that design is totally dead."

Here's the logos in question:

20081007_michaels_logo.gif

(images from CreativePro)

(I've been into Michaels more times than I'd like to admit, mostly due to children's school projects, wife's hobbies, and the Halloween and Christmas holidays, and I believe they need quite a bit more than a new logo. They need to hire more staff to help people figure out where the glitter glue and 8" styrofoam balls are. But maybe I'm getting off track here...)

The problem is that I'm not sure I've seen anything productive come out of design forums. In fact, it flies in the face of what many Designers find is a problem with design today: You cannot design by committee. So when one person says the new logo is too feminine and then the next person says it is not, whose opinion is more trusted? I could say that the whole thing would look better in teal, but I'm not a Designer, per se. (I'd be more likely to say, "Hey, where's the apostrophe?")

What I love about the interactivity of the Web is usually more product based. Go to Amazon or Target.com and you can find out what people who've bought the product really think about it. Is it flimsy? Is it powerful, but heavy? Amazon takes the whole rating to the next level by having users rate the raters and/or comment on a rater's ratings, shows a bar graph of ratings, lists most recent ratings and shows the "most helpful favorable review" and "the most helpful critical review".

All of which goes well beyond the "he said", "she said", scenario.

What I would've loved to see on this Michaels logo debate is the discussion of five well-loved and respected Designers and hearing their likes and dislikes on each.

Doesn't it just make more sense that if you hear an opinion about something difficult to judge as design, you'd want to hear an opinion from someone you respect?

You may rate this blog if you wish.

(And a hat tip to CreativePro, who really does an outstanding job of covering the creative field.)

Now I'm Curious...

225161313_fd388dd01f.jpg

So the AIGA sent their October newsletter with this interesting story at the bottom.

"AIGA members are asked to participate in a research study by Arizona State University to learn about design thinking: i.e., what motivates designers, how they learn, how they perceive the studio climate. Questions are geared toward designers and design managers, with the purpose of uncovering what drives creativity and productivity."

It seems in 1971 researchers looked at artists at University of Chicago to see how they composed paintings. They concluded that artists that were more curious produced more innovative work. 20 years later, in a follow up study, they found these artists made significantly more money over the course of their careers.

Money or know, these researchers are working with the AIGA to find out what drives designers and how that influences the culture we live in.

Intrigued?

Well, then you're probably the person they're looking for!

"Eats, Rocks & Leaves"

From the "Apostrophe Rocks" column,

Rocker's Week magazine, September 30, 2008

All right lads, this is it.

After years of writing this column and trying to teach you cloth-eared beets the most basic of English punctuation, I'm chucking the whole thing.

Because I'm knackered.

Did you bunch of rockers even clap eyes on the apostrophe in that last sentence?

The one in "I'm"?

I'd lay my bets not.

I've been writing this column for FIVE bloody years and I STILL see articles entitled "Ozzys Black Sabbath" in this very publication.

Could you lads even pick out an apostrophe in a lineup?

Did you realize this column is actually named "Apostrophe Rocks" and its ONLY concern is the use of the bleeding apostrophe?

Mates, it's bad enough I have to walk into a fresh produce section at a grocery store and be surrounded by "potatoe's" and "tomatoe's", but to see apostrophes mangled by my own brethren rockers just gives me the worst kind of tandoori two-step.

You do know most mugs think we're a bunch of mullet wearing, Harley riding half-brains, right? Well, do you have to go out and bleeding prove it to them?

See here, I'm going to give it one more go, then we'll see how it goes next week.

Listen up.

The apostrophe.

You eyeballed one the last time you scratched out the words "Rock 'n Roll" on the bathroom stall. It's that curlicue that's hanging there before the little "n". (I know it should technically be "Rock 'n' Roll", but this is the only abuse of an apostrophe that doesn't bug the knickers off me.)

You use an apostrophe when you write "Elton John's latest CD is a load of rubbish" or write about "Steve Vai's awesome guitar lick".

You do NOT use one when you're nattering on about "A stack of Randall Amp's". "Amps" does not need an apostrophe, so don't mess with it! You might as well replace the humbucker off your '72 Les Paul, old marra. You're just trying to improve upon perfection.

Did I ever tell you I taught a young bloke named Jimmy Hendrix the difference between "it's" and "its"? I can teach you a thing or two.

"It's" is ONLY used in place of "it is", got it? You can say, "It's a mind blowing riff", but you do not say, "Our van lost it's transmission".

Same for goes for "who's". If you can swap it out with "who is" or "who has", then use "who's". "Who's been drinking all the Pabst?" and "Who's going to pick young Tommy up off the floor?"

I'm not asking you to toff it up like that Morrisey bloke, quoting Yeats and prancing about the cemetery. All I'm asking is you don't put a phrase like "Rock Babe's Pix" on your Web site.

A "Rock Babe's pix"? Of whom? Her dear old granny? Her little sniveling Pomeranian? NO! You want to let blokes know this is the place to find pictures of birds in their skivvies!

Use your heads, lads!

If you know where to put the umlaut on Motorhead and Motley Crue, then you can certainly play "Pin the Apostrophe to Form the Possessive of a Singular Noun", right? (That means "Nikki Sixx's tongue ring", chums, so start nodding your head in the affirmative).

It's your last shot to make me proud. Do your old pal Jimmy Morrison a favor (taught him a thing or two about taking the apostrophe off possessive pronouns, thank you very much.)

So go out and win one for Mr. Mojo Risin'.

(See, the apostrophe is indicating the omission of letters!)

God speed, lads.

Nigel Grace

P.S. And one last thing: I do not care how lagered up you get for your gigs or recording sessions, stay sober when you proof your liner notes and mind those bleeping apostrophes!

You can always go out and neck a pint of Guinness after.

HOT (ROCKS) TALENT

In keeping with our preposterously high ROCKTOBER standards, we've decided to toss out our windows anything that we consider an effrontery to Rock 'n Roll a la the Rolling Stones at the Hyatt on Sunset.

Staple removers, correction tape, small paperclips, and double-sided sticky tape are raining down onto the corner of Fairfax and Wilshire like so many beer cups in a mosh pit.

The boss told us, "If it ain't in Jethro Tull's office, chuck it out the window!"

We didn't want to stop the momentum by pointing out that Jethro Tull isn't actually a person.

While we work to jettison this Xerox Phaser 3500 series printer off the balcony, take a look at some of these great Aquent Talent guaranteed to rock your world!

Then call us for our Classic Rock hold music (we won't be long).

Heave!

In Our Face!

n20753694538_618017_741.jpg

Now we've gone and done it, we've created our office Facebook page.

I guess it shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as the blog is already 3 years old (which is something like 25 in blog years).

Tony, our Interactive Recruiter and the rest of the staff are promising to make sure to update it frequently with events, career info, and Twitters.

I even learned that we'd be hosting a Social Media Panel next Thursday, October 16th with Ann Glenn, social media expert.

And that there's different snacks by the printer than I have listed here.

Man am I out of the loop.

Do check it out - and give us your feedback.

Or your Faceback.

Do the hip kids call it that?

Maybe not.

Get your Facebook on by clicking here.

Praise Be!

What's Up With CS4?

1659514158_e3b76cd51d.jpg

Much like Nancy Drew, I love a good mystery.

Like when Adobe teases people with sneak peaks, but won't quite give a release date for their CS4 software. (You can register online to get an email when it becomes available.)

Happily, last Monday they officially unveiled the product in a Webcast and announced the different packages the product would be released in: Master Collection, Production Premium, Web Standard, Web Premium, Design Standard and Design Premium.

Boy, I do like the sound of "Master Collection".

The nice folks over at CreativePro are also more than willing to share their first look information with you (and run reviews of the core applications in October when released).
Check here for articles on InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop CS4 & Dreamweaver and Flash CS4.

Yes, it seems CreativePro is far, far less mysterious than Adobe.

Now if we could just get them to produce some graphic and Web apps.

Current Time, Current Temp

I'm not lying... it's dang hot.

Here's what my Mac widget is saying:

weather2.jpg

Fact checking is good.

Especially when it comes to rock n' roll.

Which is why you should always take the opportunity to read the words on the karaoke screen before you blurt out the lyrics that you've been singing aloud for years in your shower.

This way, during your rendition of "Walk this Way", you won't find yourself crooning about "Marcus Wayne" during the chorus.

"She told me Marcus Wayne. Marcus Wayyyy--ne. Marcus Wayne! Marcus Wayyyy--ne!"

There is no Marcus Wayne.

When you step up to the microphone to sing the line from Elton John's "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road" ("It'll take you a couple of gin and tonics to set you on your feet again") and instead belt out, "It'll take you a couple of Vicodins to set you on your feet again", you're going to get looks. It's an interesting interpretation, but maybe a little personal for public consumption.

It's not really your fault, as singers are often on their 50th take of a song when it's finally recorded. Sometimes they mumble. Many times, speaking of Vicodin, they aren't always in a clear "head space". And who knows what the heck they were doing when they actually wrote the song.

Thus no one can understand what Bruce Springsteen was thinking when he penned "Blinded by the Light". So it's no surprise by the time Manfred Mann slurred their to way to #1 on the pop charts with it, everyone was lost. Maybe you heard the correct phrase, "Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night", as "Caught up in the noose, swinging in the night", "Dressed up like a dude, another runner in the night", or even "Held up like a loofah by the foreman of the night".

Whatever you heard, whether or not you want to sing that out loud is your choice.

The sad fact is that many of us learned to sing along to these Top 40 hits when we were kids, a time when the whole world was ripe for misinterpretation. Trying to deduce the garbled words of a half-passed out Kurt Cobain as a teen is on par with archeologists trying to crack the Rosetta Stone.

If you were 15 when John Mellancamp sang his hit "Pink Houses", there was a good chance that instead of hearing the correct lyrics, "And he looks at her and says, 'Darlin', I remember when you could stop a clock'", you may have heard "Darlin', I remember when you cooked sauerkraut."

Especially if you grew up in a German part of the Midwest.

And even though The Police were lamenting that "A year has passed since I wrote my note" in their hit "Message in a Bottle", you may have misinterpreted it as "A year has passed since I broke my nose". Maybe you thought someone threw a bottle at Sting. It wouldn't be the first time.

After a night doing history homework it might make sense that Billy Idol would be nattering about a girl with an "Eisenhower Face" instead of one who had "Eyes Without a Face."

Lyrics, by their metaphorical nature, are extremely hard on realists.

In "You're So Vain", a practical person would never expect to hear Carly Simon sing "I had a dream there were clouds in my coffee" when "grounds in my coffee" makes much more sense. Logic may have it that a band who toured endlessly on a bus like Creedence Clearwater Revival would sing about an upcoming "bathroom on the right", but they were in fact waxing poetic about a "bad moon on the rise". And certainly no one would fault a realist who believes Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson's duet "Ebony and Ivory" sounds better as "Agony and Irony."

But realist or no, everyone is cautioned to stand close enough to the karaoke screen to see that Jimi Hendrix wasn't uttering, "'Scuse me while I kiss this guy" (or "this fly"), nor was Michael Jackson singing, "The chair is not my son" in "Billie Jean".

Unfortunately, realizing that the Bob Dylan song you are about to sing has been translated into Japanese then back into English in some large game of Trans-Pacific Telephone, might not exactly give you the courage you need.

At that point it might be best to sit down, enjoy the sake, and see the next guy sing, "The ants, my friend, are blowin' in the wind."
