Lean, Mean and Green

423760146_7876758e79.jpg

You know, it's all I can do to try to get people to be more "eco", "green", or choose your own environmental catchphrase, without appearing to be Hitler Youth and yelling at someone every time they throw out their Coke can instead of putting it in the recycling bin.

Yelling at people is a great way to become unpopular, by the way.

I'm thinking of those heavily-accented New Yorkers yelling "Fur is murder!" at the fur clad women coming out of Neiman Marcus. (It did sound a bit like, "Fehr is Merhder!")

In fact, if there's something you take seriously: politics, hunting, fashion, baseball... there's a good chance when you get to yell mode you're going to start irritating everyone.

Which is why you've never seen Michael Jordan on TV holding up a pair of Nikes and screaming, "Hey, buy these damn shoes!"

Screaming is the easy way out. It's what you do to kids so they'll do what you need to do. And it's rarely used to get someone older than 18 to do something you want them to.

Which is why I prefer getting people on board the "Green Movement" by subtle suggestions, like those "Please consider the environment before printing this e-mail" tags on the end of people's email.

As a staffing company, we get a lot of paperwork on a monthly basis. Basically everyone who comes into the office needs to fill out an I-9, W-4, and go through about 15 other pages of paperwork. Not only is manpower involved filing all those things, it's a ton of paper. (Literally, after you get enough of it.)

Which is why I'm so happy we just moved toward filling out our I-9s electronically and offering the option of both Talent and Staff getting their pay stubs (and prior year W2s) electronically, which cuts down on paper and the real and environmental costs of getting those documents to everyone's houses.

The next big step? Getting our clients on board with signing electronic time cards.

Right now we we process nearly 300 every week in our office alone. That means Aquent Talent have to print out their time cards, have their supervisor sign them, then fax them to us, which produces another piece of paper. So that's two pieces of paper right there. Maybe 600 sheets of paper doesn't seem that much, but we have over 75 offices who do this every Monday of the year.

So is that big picture or little picture?

I think it's a step in the right direction.

If you just start changing your mind on this one thing, then it follows that you'll start looking at the world differently.

Just so you know, I'm not going to be screaming at you next time you chuck your Pelligrino water bottle into the trash.

And that I'll probably wait until you're out of sight before I take it out of the trash and toss it into the recycling bin for you.

BTW, If you're an Aquent Talent interested in getting off the paper pay stub addiction, just go to MyAquent "Work" section's new "View Pay Statements" option. If it's confusing, just email me and I'll walk you through it.

Mom, Apple Pie, and RSS

227776582_5886fdbd86.jpg

There's just some things you don't explain to your mother.

Like RSS feeds.

In fact, I still have a hard time explaining what it is to some of my friends.

Aquent HQ has been making gradual changes to our landing site, with more radical (um, really radical) ones promised in early January. Part of our new home page now includes a Featured Jobs feed.

It basically grabs the hottest jobs posted by Aquent North America and rolls them into our landing page. If someone is interested, they just click on the link to learn more about the opportunity, then can apply right there.

If you use Feed Readers to keep up on news, blogs, and whatnot, you can subscribe to the Featured Jobs feed and always keep tabs on what hot jobs are coming down the pike. (This would be for anyone with access to the MyAquent Job Center.)

Now as pretty as I think this is (technically), if you're crunched for time you may be better off using the Job Search Agents, which are also in the Job Center. This way you'll get alerts when the keyword searches you plug in ("marketing", "los angeles", "CMS") match up to a job that's been posted on our site. It's similar to the one on Monster, if you're familiar.

If you're lost at all, you can feel free to send me an email and I'll walk you through it.

Please do not have your mother call me.

Unless, of course, she's a pro in Flash ActionScripting 3.

Then, yes, go right ahead.

Flash, Ahhh aaaahhhh!

2370187805_a44c4f54c0.jpg

If you're in the Print world and haven't made the jump to Web yet, you may be sick of hearing and sicking the words Flash, ActionScripting, and AS2/AS3.

And, yes, there may be some fear about this unknown territory now owned by the all-powerful, all-knowing Adobe.

It's true, as much as sometimes I think it's luster may be fading, it just keeps growing.

If you're one of those folks thinking about learning more about Flash or just being around people who work with it so you can pick their brain, and you live in Los Angeles, you're in luck.

LA Flash, the Users Group in Venice, CA, just happens to be the biggest one of its kind in North America (take THAT Mexico!)

They host a lot of events over in Venice and many of them are absolutely free.

Just go here to their site to check the whole thing out.

Fear not!

By the way, have you had their new Pizza Mia pizzas? They have a different sauce than their normal pizzas, which is slightly sweeter, and it seems to have cheddar cheese on it. It's also "lightly topped" (about half) with one topping. Which we're not against, necessarily. We just think it's not a great pizza if all you want for dinner is pizza, you know?

Back to the books.

We've got these fantastic books, and you have GOT to read them. Each one contains...

Yes, pizza does sound good about now, but you have to concentrate.

As one of the first staff members at Passenger, she grew the creative team to 3 Designers and 2 Developers. Katherine would create the user interface and design and work with Programmers and Developers to fine tune the program's usability. Faith C.
Strategic Web Project Manager

If you're looking for someone who has social networking, user experience, project management, who can work with Developers and give strategic insight, then Faith is the Talent for you!

Most recently, Faith created TOR.com, a division of Macmillan Publishing, which is a social networking site dedicated to science fiction and fantasy literature, authors, and artwork. She helped to create the concepts behind the User Experience of the site through her innovative approach to Web site strategy. She decreased the number of click-thrus to get to the registration pages by having the registration portal "above the fold". She also introduced tag clouds, an art gallery page with thumbnails whose images were easily expandable, and the concept of "tabs" where users can list their own personal keywords that best display their interests and then join other users with the same! All this managed on time and under budget. Other publishers now use her genius work as the industry gold standard.

Faith also created the site for Sarah Ferguson, The Duchess of York. Hiring and managing the team to create the site using Joomla, an open source for CMS, she made the site extremely easy to update. She created a community page for all of The Duchess' fans to interact with her and each other, and an online social networking component that allows users to rack up "points" the longer they are on the site, which then turn into rewards!

Her experience includes Scholastic Online Book Clubs, Amp'd Mobile, and Sony Pictures.

Faith's amazing technical expertise includes wireframes for Web, mobile UI and emails, RSS Feeds, Joomla, WordPress, Facebook API, Google Analytics and AdSense, QA for front-end coding, Flash, Access, Publisher, Epsilon/Dream, and much more!

Suggestive

2089058279_19e60328a4.jpg

So, I spent all yesterday on jury duty downtown yesterday and learned quite a few things.

One, be prepared for a lot of sitting around. Happily I brought my entire address book database with me and managed to clean up phone numbers of people I haven't thought of since I was working in the Entertainment industry.

Two, the power of the suggestion box is strong.

You might think, if you were a Los Angeles court system employee, and you noticed everywhere you went had WiFi access (including the library and every coffee shop in LA), that you might put 2 and 2 together.

"Hey, why don't we give the jurors, who are locked in a room most of the day doing essentially nothing, access to the Internet for their laptops?"

Seems easy, right?

You know what, none of them thought about it. Or, if they did, nothing happened with it.

Only after it was suggested by jurors, was the project to install WiFi moved along. (The few computers in the back where you can buy Internet access at $8 an hour also only became available after suggestions from jurors.)

The lesson? The squeaky wheel gets the grease, and if you're given a place to make suggestions, make them.

Many times Customer suggestions carry much more weight than internal suggestions, and even something as simple as, "Why not offer Wifi to people who are away from their businesses for 8+ hours?" can improve countless lives. All because you saw it and they missed it.

Just a thought.

(BTW, we're always open to suggestions - about the blog, our email campaigns, anything except why I won't buy a new pair of hiking shoes. Anything but that. Just email me.)

"A Major Minor Retrospective"

New York, NY -

The "oohs" and "ahhs" at Museum of Modern Art tonight might be about the newly exhibited pieces by the once unknown Jeffrey Minor.

Or they may be reactions as patrons discuss the current dollar figures these "doodles" are commanding at Sotheby's and Christie's auctions.

Ironic, considering Mr. Minor's work was being thrown away with the garbage only a few short years ago.

And that the artist himself will never see a cent.

Since Jeffrey Minor died over 3 years ago, his pen and ink drawings have become the darlings of the art world, resulting in packed gallery openings and dozens of private showings everywhere from uptown Manhattan to San Francisco's trendy SoMa district.

A frustrated film director, Minor himself never had an intention of becoming a fine artist. Failing to find a single job in the film industry after 15 years of trying, Minor settled into a long career as a Clerk in the Accounts Receivable department at the Number One Widget & Personal Watercraft Co. in Los Angeles. Minor's 6-figure pieces of art are actually doodles created while he was pretending to take notes during the company's famously boring staff meetings and briefings, as well as the long-winded tirades by the company's CEO, Bugliss D. Loadsgood III.

Minor's works, mostly of grimacing men in ill-fitting power suits, are both comical and heartbreaking. Critics describe them as possessing an eerie timelessness reminiscent of Picasso's Weeping Woman and Margaret Keane's big-eyed, waif-like children popular during the 1970s.

The artist's newfound notoriety isn't exactly welcomed by everyone, in particular, Woodster Tubbs, his previous manager.

"The guy basically never listened to any of his superiors," said Mr. Tubbs yelling over the noisy machinery in the widget factory. "In staff meetings he sat in the corner with this weird grin on his face, incessantly scribbling in that confounded notebook." After swigging from his fifth cup of coffee he added, "Everyone knew he was unhappy here, but he kept coming back, day after day. Even after we'd taken away his parking pass, phone, and chair and told him never to come back."

But return he did. The company's Human Resources Department confirmed that Minor continued to attend meetings and staff events for a full year and a half after he was fired.

"Worst of all," the artist's former manager winced, "During a quarterly meeting a few years back, John was doodling on a notepad and I took it from him and threw it out the window to make a point."

Wince he should. Experts put a Jeffrey Minor 8 1/2 x 11-inch doodle in the high $90 to $100K price range.

One of the artist's most powerful works, a six-armed figure with a coffee mug held by each, is currently owned by billionaire William Buffet and on display in his home library.

Some of Minor's co-workers remember him as a particularly irritated man and many in Accounts Receivable were surprised to discover that he wasn't still currently working in their department.

"I just sent some paperwork to him last week," muttered Velveeta Spumoni, another clerk, adding that most people in her department didn't notice he was particularly unhappy. A quick look around the floor, which boasts over 35 poorly Xeroxed copies of the infamous "You Want It When?" cartoon on its walls, shows she may indeed have a point.

"I think he secretly liked meetings, because it gave him tons of time to doodle. And live models to boot," said Candice Richardson, a co-worker who asked not to be named. "He was the only person laughing when we were dragged to that dreadful combination seminar, 'Sexual Harassment & Building Your 401(k)'. The worse the speakers got, the more pictures he cranked out."

Tonight's MoMa gala opening contains some of Minor's best-known illustrations paired with the works of other artists in an exhibition called "Artists from A/R".

Dan Rather, an avid Jeffrey Minor collector and on hand for a recent gallery showing, spoke candidly about the artist. "He consistently made poor life decisions. He was a brilliantly dreadful film director and even worse at differentiating between debits and credits in his chosen profession. Oddly, these failures only fueled his work as a Doodle Artist."

He added quietly, "I don't even want to get into his choice of a wife."

The veteran newsman was cut short by a well-aimed bump from Minor's widow, who had crept up behind him in her now trademark moccasins and Puma jogging shorts. Mrs. Minor, now receiving the windfall of profits from her deceased husband's artwork sales, can only be politely described as a bitter shrew bent on making everyone around her miserable. The art world crone muttered something under her breath about CBS before making a beeline for the hors d'oeuvres.

If it seems everyone is making out well except the artist himself, you are not far off. Minor, who would have been 55 this month, had tried rather unsuccessfully to kill himself more than 143 times over the years. Attempting everything from wetting his nose and sticking it into a light socket to throwing himself in front of a moving Yugo, Minor actually died of boredom while trying to make it through the Director's Cut of John Travolta's "Battlefield Earth".

Mr. Minor's work will be on display at MoMA until October 31st.

It's Back!

215779460_871f5cb83b.jpg

Our Local Networking Events page, that is.

After a lot of trial and error (it's seems like we've gone through every version of Movable Type on our blog in the last 5 months), our sidebar with local events is back in action.

See, it's right over there to the right.

Click on any event you see and it will take you to a page letting you know more about it and have a link to the event Website.

Isn't the Web wonderful?

The Events page itself can be reached by clicking the bar Local Networking Events (or by clicking here).

If you have any related events to pass along, please do. And by "related" I do not mean your friend's film premiere, but rather anything related to design, marketing, the Web, etc.

That makes sense, right?

Sometimes you have to spell out these things...

Hell is for...?

48823238 8E72Ba3062

Spencer Cross from Kernspiracy isn't giving too many hints about what he has up his sleeve for the current meeting of Designers this Wednesday, but he's assured us:

  • He'll be showing a film for free at BETALEVEL
  • This is a film every Designer has heard of
  • There will be spontaneous arm wrestling

I'm wondering if it's a film about a very famous font.

Hmmmm.

Who Moved My Peanut Butter?

Skippy3

Why is the fact that people are arguing about peanut butter important?

Is it important?

I guess time will tell what kind of effect a site like Mouse Print, which "exposes the strings and catches buried in the fine print" has on consumer awareness.

Topic of the day? Unilever reduced the size of their Skippy brand peanut butter, but the packaging looks exactly the same, a feat executed by hollowing out the bottom of the container (see picture here). Their competitor, Jif (made by Smuckers) has already made darn sure to promote the fact that their jar is still 18 ounces.

Mouse Print asked Unilever why the change, and the company responded that, essentially, rising prices have led them to lower the amount of product to keep a competitive price.

I don't know about you, but my grocery store gives a Price Per Unit ratio below the product which is danged helpful to those of us who are woefully math challenged.

A friend of mine had complained last year on her blog about how confusing it is that companies (which she referred to as "Marketers") are forever changing the playing field, so it was hard to be an informed consumer.

I think that's always been the case (there's an old expression which captures that sentiment, "Have you ever heard a huckster yell, 'Rotten tomatoes?'") People who make their living selling things aren't usually going to give you the product/service's downside. That's left up to us, the consumer.

Thus the other ancient expression, "Caveat emptor".

The good thing about sites like Mouse Print is that they let the consumers rant and rave and check facts with each other (and the companies), so consumers at least have some facts on their side. Which is better than hearing from a coworker, as I did years ago, "Did you know Snapple has KKK connections?" who then pointed at the label of his Snapple Iced Tea.

My reply?

"Um, that's the Kosher symbol."

Koshersymbol

If you're interested, NPR had a talk with Ben Popken from Consumerist about this whole topic, which you can listen to here.

Why, Daddy, Why?

Dscn4411

Well, Jimmy, apparently no one at the store knows this is a "Baby Apple".

Hard to believe that there was a time every item at in your grocery cart was actually keyed into a cash register. And, amazingly, that there were once checkers who could identify anything from a kumquat to a Jerusalem artichoke and tell you how much each cost per pound, but there you have it.

Eat your Baby Apple, son.

Green vs. Green Washing

226210365 1C94D8205E

Okay, let's face it, The People have caught onto the "green" Marketing tricks.

And they're mad as hell.

Saying your plastic bag is saving the Earth just because you can use it again as a garbage bag (as the American Chemistry Council insists) or that you're an environmentally friendly green gas station has made a lot of "green marketing" efforts seem ridiculous and lame.

So what's a Marketing or Production Manager to do if they want their efforts to be more sustainable?

Well, I think the first thing you have to do is be honest. If you can save 1,200 trees by using recycled paper in your mailing, then not only should you do it, you should feel good about promoting it. But you should also be aware that the bar is being set higher and the knuckleheads may be confusing the issue just to sell more tires than their competitors.

A few years ago, a few of us saw Chris Hacker who was at the incredibly green Aveda, but had signed on as Senior Vice President of Global Design and Design Strategy at Johnson & Johnson, and it was a real eye opener. I mean, I have a compost pile, but this guy is now on the leading edge of a Fortune 500 global brand.

(Which doesn't mean I'm giving up my compost pile, but rather that I'll stop bragging about it.)

If you're looking to educate yourself in true "green marketing" efforts, from paper buying to soy inks, you may be interested in a free Webinar on the topic, sponsored by Neenah Paper.

It's called Far-Sighted Sustainability and hosted by Marc Alt, president and founder of Marc Alt + Partners, "a design, research and brand strategy agency dedicated to sustainable innovation".

Here's the Webinar link and, as I said, it's free.

And, I believe, fairly sustainable.

When "Co" Is Up To No Good

522535902 C0E596768D

So many nice "co"s.

"Cohabitation", "Codirecting", "Coexist", "Co-Op", "Coworker".

And some bad ones, notably "Co-Employment".

For those of you not paying attention (and why should you, unless you're in the staffing industry or HR?) in 2000 Microsoft paid out millions to settle a lawsuit because they didn't protect themselves from co-employment liability. It was ugly messy.

If you're in HR, staffing, or think your company might run the risk of co-employment issues, then my friend, you should tune into the Aquent webcast Co-Employment: Risks and Rewards.

(Once again, I was barred from titling it, "Co-Employment, Scourge of the DEVIL!" They really don't know what they're missing hiring a Branding genius like myself.)

Moving on, Edward Lenz, who is Sr. VP for Public Affairs and General Counsel for the American Staffing Association and wrote a book on the topic, will " help you gain a better understanding of co-employment, the potential risks, and how you can manage this dynamic to best serve everyone involved."

And keep Satan out of your workplace! (Okay, that's mine.)

Free, as always, just go right here to register.

"The Time of Your Life"

In a landmark case, the estate of Mr. Ronald Dodgson is suing the estate of Andy Warhol on the grounds that Mr. Dodgson did not receive his 15 minutes of fame before he passed away.

"It's an outrage," exclaimed the Dodgson estate's lawyer, Paul Nyquist, during his press conference held in the Colonial Meeting Room at Anaheim's Ramada Inn. "Ronald Dodgson wanted nothing but to be recognized on a worldwide scale. And whether he did anything remarkable in his life (which, notably, he did not), he deserves those precious 15 minutes, just the same as Emeril Lagasse or that guy at Walmart screaming, 'Isn't anything made in the United States anymore?!'"

In his own press conference, the lawyer for Warhol's estate articulated that the artist intended his comment as a wry observation on media publicity in the late 20th century, not as a guarantee of fame. He also indicated that Mr. Warhol did not wear a wig and name-calling was unnecessary, apparently in reference to previous correspondence from Nyquist.

When Nyquist was asked what kind settlement the Dodgson estate was seeking, he replied that the Warhol estate merely needed to provide his deceased client with his additional 12 minutes of fame, however they saw fit.

"We're basically giving them carte blanche in their handling of this," Nyquist said. "We'll take anything except those ugly 'Lipstick' paintings Warhol was always doing. I don't think Mr. Dodgson would've wanted that."

When asked about why his client was only requesting 12 minutes instead of 15, he calmly responded that Mr. Dodgson had already had his 3 minutes of fame.

Apparently in 1967 Mr. Dodgson stood in a grocery store line behind singer Lena Horne's business manager, John Hammond, while Hammond was in a heated debate with the checker over the price of Wrigley's Spearmint gum.

"It was a moment he'd never forget," Nyquist said. "He milked that story for all it was worth, telling everyone he met and repeating it at all family gatherings. " Indeed the story told once again by a speaker at Mr. Dodgson's funeral. And then again another 10 minutes later.

Nyquist quipped, "We are fully satisfied with those 3 minutes."

The lawyer also answered queries regarding his current suit against Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Nyquist asserts both actors have been hording thousands of 15-minute segments of other people's fame and using them for their own celebrity status.

"It's unfair and un-American!" the lawyer said before posing for newspaper photographers.

The Dodgson case will go to court this November.

HOT TALENT

It's amazing when you think about all the things people do in combination: brushing their teeth while making the bed, driving while eating breakfast, watching TV while pretending to listen to their spouse...

But in a world that welcomes an Olympic sport that unites fencing, pistol shooting, freestyle swimming, horseback riding, and a 3 km cross-country run, combining things certainly seems to be the wave of the future.

Life would certainly be a little duller if that guy with the candy bar hadn't run into that other fellow with the jar of peanut butter.  And woe to the Swiss Army sitting down to a meal without corkscrews in their knives!

On that note, please find this week's list of terrific (and available) Aquent Talent, ready, willing and able to put together the best combination yet:

Them and you!

Enjoy!

Those of you who've been visiting this blog for awhile may have noticed the sidebars that went missing a few months ago.

First off, congrats to you for noticing!

And secondly, yes, I'm working to get them back.

For those of you who didn't look much over to the side, that's where the Local Events Page lived as well as the list of Food By The Printer and Blogroll.

I thought I'd take a minute to run the local events Jamie and I have gathered. We figured you my need to line up an air conditioned place or two to be in the upcoming hot months.

Just click on the title of the event to go to their site.

Have fun!
