"Naval Gazing"

As we come through the turnstile you'll be able see the spectacular Tomb of the Little Known Sailor.

If the tour group will look closely at the eternal flame on the top of the monument you will notice that it is coming out of the top of an antique whiskey bottle. This is a faithful replica of the 160 proof whiskey bottle found lying beside the passed out sailor discovered on this hallowed ground over one hundred and six years ago.

The tomb itself, a classic example of American folk art, has withstood tornadoes, floods, and the occasional rock-throwing teen and continues to be one of the least visited Monuments in the National Park System.

Dedicated on October 28, 1906 and designated as a National Monument in 1924, the monument was erected to commemorate sailors who have fallen while on shore leave.

On that historic October day, five off-duty sailors came upon their collapsed comrade and set out to build a monument of empty beer cans and whiskey bottles around the body.

Had the sailor drunkenly stumbled and passed out before he could reach his ship or had he simply been trying to drown his sorrows in cheap hooch?

This might have been a question for the ages had the sailor not actually woken up during the construction and begged the others to stop.

Fortunately for us, the extraordinarily inebriated "construction crew "was reluctant to give up their task and simply acted as if they could not to hear his pleas. They quickly entombed their fellow sailor then left for an impromptu wake at a nearby pub.

As luck would have it the tomb's door was never completed and the captive sailor made a quick getaway into the night.

No one would ever learn his name.

The door to the tomb remains unfinished to this day.

If the group will turn your attention to the east side of the tomb, you will see a bas-relief of a sailor and a white angel. Observe how the angel is helping the sailor back onto the bar stool from which he has tumbled.

This is believed to be the work of Terrence D'Nupre, an overzealous sculptor who devoted his life to working on public art pieces for which he had not been commissioned. Crafted out of dozens of aspirin bottles, it's a fitting complement to the tomb itself.

As we come around the south side, we see a specially trained member of the 3rd United States Ocean Patrol, who has been tasked with guarding the monument 25 hours a day. (They insist that they go the extra hour.)

Please do not approach the guard as he is instructed to engage anyone within five feet of the monument in a verbal battle of profanity.

If you have binoculars handy, you will note the particular redness in the guard's eyes. Before coming to work, each elite member of the Patrol must report across the street to Meehan's Public House and rapidly drink five shots of whiskey in succession then follow it with a plate of steak and kidney pie. The guard must be physically thrown out of the establishment into a nearby mud puddle before his shift starts.

Even without binoculars you can observe the telltale dirt stains around the jacket and leggings and the "I-haven't-seen-a-woman-in-over-400-days" stare.

Ladies in the group will now appreciate our insistence on wearing false beards for the duration of their visit.

Notably, the celebrated artist Jackson Pollock designed the costumes worn by the Ocean Patrol during one of his numerous weeklong benders. The drip technique made famous by the painter can be seen as embroidery on the leggings, coat, and long cape. These costumes are exceptionally challenging to maintain and clean, a fact made more difficult as the inebriated guards are continually staining them with grass, blood, mud, and horse manure.

Here on the west side of the monument you can view an enormous plaque dedicated to the Little Known Sailor. Each line contains the name of a drinking establishment from which a sailor has been ejected while on shore leave. Even using an extremely small 3-point font, the plaque was filled by 1908, two short years after the monument's completion. Additional establishment names have been carved onto the granite wall you see to your left. The wall holds the record, at just over 10 miles, as the longest continuous granite wall in the world.

As we step around the south side of the tomb, and conclude our tour, we find the Tomb of the Little Known Sailor Pub and Gift Shoppe.

Here you will find countless varieties of delicious sandwiches and other "pub grub", commemorative souvenirs, and over 777 beers on tap.

I hope you've enjoyed your visit to Tomb of the Little Known Sailor National Monument, and we do hope to see you again soon.

Do please remember to tip your waitress and return your beards as you exit.

Thank you.

So we thought it might be wise to send along the "what do to in an earthquake" link.

Maybe to share with any of the folks in your office that looked perplexed during the temblor.

You can download the LA Fire Department Earthquake guide (as a PDF) by clicking here.

Print this out on your way to the Red Cross to read about these wonderful Aquent Talent, ready and willing to rock your (business) world!

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Enjoy!

As a Designer, Art Director, Creative Director, Project Manager, etc. that is.

Not to push the Eco Point so far that I create backlash make people destroy the Earth just to spite me and my treehugging compatriots, I did want to pass this site along.

101 Things Designers Can Do To Save The Earth

Great advice like, 30. Avoid using colored paper stock, 14. Use something besides vinyl for banners, 13. Support your local paper mill, 6. Think about shipping.

Maybe I can just tell the naysayers since Aquent sponsored it, it's a marketing ploy.

Would that make them feel happier?

I can never really tell about naysayers.

Shake n' Bake

Los_Angeles.gif

Thanks to everyone from all over the U.S. who called in to see how we were.

We're okay, I swear.

Funny, I was just getting ready to go to lunch when I heard Sharon say, "Oh, here it goes" and proceeded to feel the building roll back and forth and watch the lights swing.

We all just stood here for the minute that it happened.

Then we went to lunch.

With, apparently, everyone else in the city, who were already standing out on the street. (Prompting the discussion: Is that really the best place to be in an earthquake?)

Happily, Reuters is reporting, "no reports of injuries, major structural damage or power outages". Happy fact, considering it's a 5.8 magnitude earthquake right near LA that took place in the middle of a workday.

Regardless, if you're working through Aquent and need assistance, please feel free to call the office and someone cheerful will help you out.

Or me, I'll help you out.

And maybe it's a good time to review the Red Cross Earthquake Safety tips (which of course, would be better if they came in the form of a coloring book).

Community Chester

2092991180_ee17d1ef75_o.jpg

Our stellar Recruiters, Tony and Julia, started sending their Aquent Talent Community emails a few weeks ago which I thought I'd pass along.

Yes, I'm always thinking about you.

Okay, I can take advantage of their awesome brain power on this Monday afternoon.

If you're a MyAquent user, the Job Search Agent tips below works really well.

The article on Too Much Information seems obvious, but when you've sat through a number of interviews, you'd be surprised how many times interviewees will make these pretty obvious mistakes.

Here's what I've cribbed from their most recent e-mail:

Job Search Agents
...A great way to be alerted about jobs that match what you’re looking for is to sign up for Aquent’s Job Search Agents in the Job Center. In this way, YOU choose the criteria and our system automatically emails you as jobs are posted that match what you’re looking for!

  • Login to your MyAquent account
  • In the left hand column/list, double click Job Center
  • Under FIND WORK in the left hand column, double click Manage job Search Agents
  • Click Create Job Search Agent
  • Enter search criteria and click submit
  • When jobs matching search criteria come up, you will automatically receive an email with that job listing

Content Social Networking
We’ve been talking about social networking, online and off, but have you actually thought about the content you put on your social networking pages? It’s very easy for someone to find us these days, so if you’re actively looking for work, you might want to consider your content! In the following article, Ellen Sautter and Diane Crompton, co-authors of “Seven Days to Online Networking” mention how important it is to use these sites to “establish your credibility and personal brand.” WE LOVE THAT! Establishing your personal brand is the best way to think about it!

Too Much Information
Going along with the theme of branding yourself, here’s a useful article on too much information shared while interviewing. This might seem like basic common knowledge but you’d be surprised at how much information a candidate is willing to share about themselves. Lets just chalk it up to nerves...

"Complanity Fair"

Peoria, Ill. (AP) - Thousands are rushing (albeit begrudgingly) to the opening week of the fourth annual World's Unfair being held in Peoria, Illinois.

Creators of the event tout that while the World's Fair (and WorldExpo) showcases innovations and celebrations of culture, the World's Unfair bemoans the general humdrumness of everyday life and the fact that universe is slowly falling apart.

"We think this is exactly why OUR fair will go on indefinitely," says Unfair director Stuart Connors. "Frankly, we're sick of hearing that everything is looking up, when we know for a fact just the opposite is happening."

He added, "Plus all those perky people are so absurdly irritating."

The event is being held for the first time at the fairgrounds surrounding the Peoria Dome, the nation's largest dome made completely of Popsicle sticks. This year's featured attractions include Journey To (Your Really Pathetic) Tomorrow, The Low Energy Pavilion, an Allergy Sufferer's Garden, an IMAX documentary on the history of taxation, a "CareerCoaster" featuring a 20-story drop simulating the heights of success leading to the doldrums of middle management, and even a Lactose-Intolerant Food Court where people from all around the world with sensitive digestive systems can gather together and safely complain over a soy latte and dairy-free ice cream.

Still hoping to be added next week are the exhibits "New Inventions Changing Your Future (Yeah, Right)" and the Pavilion of Unrealistic Fears.

The architectural centerpiece for the fair is fountain featuring a 300-foot half empty glass of water.

On hand for Unfair is the event's sluggish mascot, Torpor. A costumed three-toed sloth, the furry character spends his days alternately shaking his head in despair and napping in a hammock near the shabbily constructed Coliseum of Compromise.

Scheduled acts include international demotivational speaker Les S. Less, Esperanto enthusiast Ken Gordon, and an assortment of child actors, most notably Jimmy Osmond.

The very fact that over four hundred people showed up on opening day was a surprise even to the event's director.

"I was just hoping that at least my family would show up," Connors said.

Ironically, of those hundreds, none of them were the executive's family members.

"That is just so typical of them," added Connors while downing a slice of cheeseless pizza and a chocolate SilkShake. "They never do what I want to do."

Programs and shows will continue through the month or until interest wanes on the part of promoters and sponsors

Too Raw for Web?

We're still recovering from Aquent Prom but I felt I'd be doing everyone a disservice if I didn't pass along this CreativePro story on Photoshop's Camera Raw:

"Camera Raw comes free with Photoshop, but many people ignore it because of its complexity."

It's a tutorial that's an installment of the The Russell Brown Show available as QuickTime download right here.

Give the People What They Want

2314667356_71ba8067f1.jpg

Flashforward 2008 just announced their Film Festival Finalists which, happily, you can look at here at their site.

For those of you who just love to be a little more interactive yourselves, they're holding a whole People's Choice Awards (which is not trademarked as is TV's popular People's Choice awards) that allows you to look at the pieces and vote on your favorite.

Sadly, there is no ballot stuffing.

You know, there's a public act that's just gone out of favor.

Regardless, this should get your primed for the November elections.

And don't forget, Aquent LA is still blogging! Today's post: Creepy Euro Burger King Adverts

THAT BIT AT THE END

"I Swear!"

Having kids around the workplace is fun. Except, of course, when they shred important documents, drain all the water out of the Arrowhead dispenser, or hack into the company database and e-mail all the customers that their credit histories have been compromised.

And while hosting children this summer in your office can be a joy, it can also be very difficult for staff members who were apparently raised on the high seas by pirates and unfamiliar with the many wonderful euphemisms available in the English language.

So, instead of locking these foulmouthed cretins in the supply closet when children visit your office, we've developed this primer intended to help out any person who may have issues speaking around children; chiefly those given to seeing the world through four-lettered glasses and offending everyone in a 50 foot radius.

And with family picnics right around the corner, this makes the ideal pass along to share with guests and relatives. Say those ones who tend to congregate and linger around beer-filled coolers.

So get out your erasers and make way for these terrific surrogate swear words!

------------------------

We've divided these substitutes into three different categories.

The first falls under banner of "Sound-Alikes".

Popular with the parents, these sound very similar to the offending word, thus eliminating the tedious process of learning a new and wholly different-sounding euphemism and still being able to enjoy the satisfaction of swearing.

Using these words is much like drinking non-alcoholic beer at a party.

(You may recognize some as those dubbed in by television networks when showing an adaptation of a Quentin Tarantino film.)

Exclamation points added for emphasis.

Son of a beach!
Shoot!
Darn!
Dang it!
Dang it all to heck!
Dagnabit!
Dad gummit!
Cheese and rice!
Jiminy Crickets!
Cheesy cripes!
Fudge!
Freaking!
Flipping!
Mother Hubbard!
Sugar!

For advanced cursers, there are the "Safe-Swears". Words you may not have used since you were young yourself.

Heck!
Baloney! (alt. Bulloney!)
Malarkey!
Hokum!
Hogwash!
Doggone it!
Balderdash!
Gadzooks!
Rats!
Bunk!
For crying out loud!
Nuts!
Jumpin' Jehosaphat!
Goodness gracious!
Good grief!
For Goodness' sake!
For Pete's sake!
For the love of Pete! (as a last resort)
Land sakes alive! (again, as a last resort)

For our final group, words which merely sound indecent by the inclusion of religious terminology (but nothing could be farther from the truth).

These are the "Minced Oaths".

Holy mackerel!
Holy smoke!
Holy cow!
(Basically anything with "holy" in it is up for grabs, i.e., Holy spumoni!)
Judas Priest!
Godfrey Daniel!
Christmas!
Heavens to Betsy!
Oh Heavens!
Heavens above!
Good Heavens!
For Heaven's sake!

Put them all together and what have you got?

"Holy Heckfire, Mathers! That flippin' report was due to the client by 4pm and you haven't even started it! Jiminy Crickets, man, get to it!!"

Yes, a child-safe environment.

Shucks, you may want to bring children into your office all year long!

Though we do believe there might be a law against that.

Euro Trash?

111308450_6142a71765.jpg

Meant as clever tray liners at Burger King in Germany (at least that's where this blogger got them), this series of ads featuring an onion with his pants around his ankles, a sniper attempting to kill an onion (wow, they really don't like onions), and a vegetable red light district clearly shows the difference in sensibilities between Americans and Europeans.

Question is, what happens when this stuff hits the global market via blogs, YouTube, and the like?

(I'm thinking about the funny Swedish Ikea ad everyone was passing around a few years ago.)

Do you, as a company, set out to protect your brand by making your European ads more conservative? Or just let the fries fall where they may?

You May Just Pee Yourself

For many people summertime means vacation time, but for many Americans it's just another stressful season that brings out the worst in us.

So, if your anxiety always seems to win out when you start planning projects like trips to the beach, picnics, or (ack!) summer romances, be sure to make a stop at your local Buy-4-Less superstore, because we're your...

98 CENTS OR LESS OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE HEADQUARTERS!

Whether you're looking for enough aluminum foil to cover your windows (2 for 98 cents) or just need something to help check out that suspicious new neighbor (Mr. Peepie's Spy Telescopes are just 98 cents each), don't even THINK of blockading yourself in your home without visiting us first!

Unlike those Club stores, our friendly and thrifty staff can help find everything you need to help you cope when the going gets rough.

Germs got you down? We've got row upon row of Soap, Disinfectants, Cleansers, Mops, Brooms, and everything else you can use to really get your house absolutely immaculate before deciding you may actually leave it.

Compulsive hand washer? We've got you and your hands covered with our wide assortment of Mild Liquid Soaps, available in both scented and unscented varieties. So easy on the hands, you may even decide to soak in it!

Only a store with our massive volume buying power is able to bring you the exceptional Fone Call Recorder at just 98 cents!!! Was that an alien disguised as a telephone solicitor? Record everything the caller is saying by simply writing it down on this handy yellow pad! Is your phone tapped? Write down the number of clicks you hear every time you call, then tally them up at the end of the day!

Will the Denver library track you down for that book you checked out six years ago? Has your mother been kidnapped by CIA operatives? Seems subjects like these things ALWAYS come up when you're trying to pack up the cooler for a relaxing day out. The answer's just a phone call away with our inexpensive ready-to-charge Buy-4-Less Phone Cards at a ridiculously low 77 cents each.

Light switches wear out fast when you turn them on and off repeatedly, so replace them quickly and safely with our 3 for 98 cents LiteSafe Brand Switches and 98 cent Screwdriver Set. Just remember to turn the electricity off first!

Never ask yourself again whether or not you left the oven on with our 2 for 98 cents Pliers. Ideal for taking knobs off stoves and removing on/off switches from coffee pots, irons, and much, much more!

Speaking of more:

* Collecting paper? We've got miles and miles of Buy-4-Less String, perfect for your stockpile!

* We have 50-pound bags of Cat Litter for the shockingly low price of 3 for 98 cents!

* Take a break from ritualistic counting with our handy AutoMiniCalc Calculators (just 98 cents each)!

* Do yourself a good "turn"! All Doorknobs are just 3 for 88 cents, so pick up an entire case!

* Nothing says fanatical perfectionism like Giant Rubber Erasers, and we've got 'em by the truckload, just 20 for 98 cents!

You'd be CRAZY to pass up bargains like these!!!

But hurry down, because at prices like these, everything will be flying out the door! (Not literally, all objects will remain on shelves during sale.)

Got O.C.D.?

Get to Buy-4-Less A.S.A.P.!

And don't forget us when the dark, dreary Fall and Winter seasons come our way, because we're also your...

98 CENTS OR LESS MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER HEADQUARTERS!

AIGA LA Goes Home

To my home, apparently.

The 2008 AIGA Leadership Retreat was held in my home town of Omaha, Nebraska for "three days to connect with and be inspired by other chapters across the country."

And it's odd to think of AIGA leaders from NYC, LA, and SF, going down to Johnny's for the country's finest steaks, a restaurant conveniently located right above a stockyard. (No, I am not kidding. My prom was there. A scene in "About Schmidt" was filmed there. Years ago a steer got loose while everyone was dining quietly on martinis and New York Strips.)

Regardless, the current president of AIGA LA, Michael Lejeune gives a great blow-by-blow on what he learned on the Omahablog portion of the site.

If you're interested in where AIGA is headed, including AIGA China, you should definitely take a look.

This Blog is Not Broken

Really, we had every intention in the world to update this blog for you. But as the man said, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Hopefully you weren't visiting here every day hoping for some crucial piece of useful information (wow, would you be in the wrong place, fella.)

I won't try to get your sympathy by telling you that Jenn, who was going to blog here, was a heck of a lot busier than she thought she'd be and that, weirdly, I couldn't access the blog due to a migration to the new Movable Type platform.

Or how sad that last fact was when, during my vacation, three relatives sat in the kitchen at the vacation house with their laptops, working away on emails, fwd:fwd:fwd: jokes, and looking up debated information on Wikipedia.

Regardless, we're back, semi-well rested, and ready to pass on "knowledge knuggets" to make your life better.

Really.

Like this Voice Mail Message to an "elegant lady" (set to video on YouTube) by a guy calling himself Dmitri. I urge you to take a break from your busy day to listen to the real Ladies Man.

Warning, this voice mail may make you throw your iPhone at the next man walking by.
