THAT BIT AT THE END

"What's the Bon Mot?"

Have you noticed that Merriam-Webster's Dictionary is woefully impractical when you're looking for a word that doesn't exist?

Say a word like "alcohesion", a term which perfectly describes the phenomenon of a napkin sticking to the bottom of your Scotch on the rocks.

Or "wordnesia", the psychological state in which your mind thinks that the word you've just written down correctly appears to be misspelled (then have to go around the office asking people, "Is that how 'throughout' is spelled? Doesn't it look weird?")

Certainly the French might be able to help out here, as it was they who brought us words for indescribable stuff like "deja vu" and "fois gras".

In the 80's these words were called Sniglets. But the problems is, they never made it from the hit TV show Not Necessarily the News, into an English language dictionary.

As a result, almost no one uses them.

Except those people still listening to Duran Duran and lamenting the demise of leg warmers and Sergio Valente jeans.

But how much easier would our lives be if we did!

Words like "diffusevator", a physics term describing what happens when one person leaves an elevator and everyone else has to fill in the now empty space. And "disconfect", the act of sterilizing a piece of candy dropped on the floor by blowing on it, based on the belief that someone can blow bacteria off an object.

Picture a mom who can accurately use the term "disconsibulate" to describe what happens when she tries to yell at one of her kids, but for some reason has to go through the list of all her kids' names first. ("Renee, Sandy, Rick...  BOBBY, GET OVER HERE!!")

Imagine the comfort you'd feel just knowing the existence of the word "doHoover." Just knowing other people are using the same word to describe the act of running a vacuum over the same won't-be-sucked-up  piece of fuzz again and again, you'd know you're not the only one who refuses to put the vacuum down and pick it up by hand.

The same for "furnindents", those indentations that appear in carpets after a piece of furniture has been removed.

Imagine what a better place the world would be if we had terminology for those little black boxes in the right-hand corner of bill envelopes which tell you exactly where to put the stamp ("idiot boxes"). Or one that describes the gunk that collects around the spout of a ketchup bottle ("catsglup"). Or names those grill marks on a grilled steak ("sirlines").

Okay, maybe not the kind of world improvement at the level of sliced bread or Post-its, but certainly better than inventions like the "crossover" SUV and high-fructose corn syrup.

Considering the number of words no longer used in everyday English language such as "mactation" (killing of a sacrificial victim, hardly ever used nowadays) or "throat-pit" (the depression between collarbones where they meet the breastbone), there certainly seems to be a void where those words used to be.

Why not fill that space with words we can actually use every day?

If we wish to keep the English language alive, it's the only choice we can make.

And after that...

Brunch!

Fun With E-Mail!

568577101_bbd766984c.jpg

Don't you wish there was a product like this to take care of your InBox? I mean, all the cc's, bcc's, fyi's, etc., etc., etc.

I don't know if you've been listening to NPR this last week, but they've been running stories on Email Hell.

In the series they've got: Making Fridays E-Mail Free, Does E-Mail Curb Productivity?, Family Spam Is Crushing My Inbox, and so much more.

In fact, you could make today an e-mail free day and spend the rest of the afternoon listening to these stories.
I'd recommend it, as they've got some pretty good people giving advice on how to control the 5th Circle of Electronic Hell.

The shows are archived here.

Please don't FWD: FWD: FWD: this to your friends.

You Say It's Your Birthday?

It's hard to capture, either in pictures or in words, the feeling you get on your birthday day at Aquent.

I'll let the camera tell part of the story:

DSCN4354.JPG

DSCN4358.JPG DSCN4355.JPG DSCN4357.JPGDSCN4360.JPG

(I had to include the bunny in my rolling file.)

I'm leaving on vacation for two weeks, so I have no idea who thought this was a great idea. Can you be happy and overwhelmed at the same moment?

Apparently.

I'm leaving this blog in the very capable hands of Jenn, my fearless coworker, who guarantees she's got "mad HTML" skills.

In the meantime, have fun!

Print to Web

Just a short post today about a great (starter) article for those people moving from Print Design to Web Design.

From a guy who has "been there and done that", Wesley Grubbs, from Pitch Interactive.

Let him tell you why tennis players can't play racquetball.

Right here at CreativePro.

Design in the Usual Places

1604949430_8e15a9c449.jpg

The great thing about being a Designer, or just appreciating design, is that great design is absolutely everywhere.

(Sadly, it's also the worst thing, as bad design is everywhere too. But I'm getting off the topic here...)

It doesn't surprise me that many of the print Designers I meet also love architecture, but I rarely hear one talking about the structure and feeling of a great city. It's an odd thing, I think. Just as a great coffeehouse can seem to inspire a design, novel, or a romance, think of what creativity a great city like Paris, Amsterdam, or San Francisco produces.

Which is why, if you're a design aficionado, you should check out the Projects for Public Spaces site, which is a non-profit "dedicated to helping people create and sustain public places that build communities."

These are the people behind encouraging local farmers markets, mixed-use developments, thriving downtowns, and better use of public transportation.

I mean, how can you not love their motto? Building Community, Creating Places, Using Common Sense

Maybe you won't agree with all their ideas (and truly, for Designers, dissension is vital part of the process, right?), but it's always great to see their takes what makes a city so right, and what makes it so wrong.

Book Designers Lose Their Heads

2209551976_1152b50aa5.jpg

Or, rather, their stock photography images are losing theirs.

I guess, only on "chick-lit" novels, according to Gawker.

Looks like Light Summer Reading just got lighter!

Referral Madness!

Well, I'm pretty pleased to announced that Aquent's rolled out a brand, spanking new referral program, Aquent Talent Network!

Consider it a "Frequent Hire" sort of dealio (which is the name I pitched, which was promptly turned down). Refer people to us, get points. When they get work, get more points. Turn points in for cash. Yes, cash. Not stays in hotels or for wheeled luggage, cash. (You may buy stays in hotels or wheeled luggage with the cash if you wish.)

It's open to anyone with a MyAquent or a Job Center Account.

All the info by logging into MyAquent or Job Center, then clicking here!

ROI 4 U

2449999468_9fe8c8ee0e_o.jpg

I was just reading our HQ blog by Matt Grant and learned our recent Webcast, Web Design for ROI: How Design Impacts the Bottom Line, had a massive draw of 2,000 people sign up.

And the slides, featured last week on slideshare.net last week, have already been viewed over 8,000 times.

Which begs the question (as Matt queried), why is it "fourteen or so years into a business world increasingly dominated by the web, people are still trying to figure out how to make the web work for them?"

I'm personally of the belief that Marketers are always looking at ROI, whether it's for Direct Mail or HTML e-mails. But then again, that may not answer the question why so many people registered.

Regardless, if you're interested in listening to the recorded call, you can still hear Lance Loveday, founder, CEO of Closed Loop Marketing and Sandra Niehaus, VP user experience, creative director of Closed Loop Marketing present the entire Webcast by clicking here and registering.

As always, free.

(Regarding the picture, "Roi" means "King" in French.)

"Sympathy from the Devil"

This is part of a series of advice columns we've collected from around the globe.

----

Dear Satan,

Every time our neighborhood holds a friendly summertime get together, a certain family down the block never fails to show up with a cooler full of beer. My husband and I are trying to teach our children, ages 14 and 16, that one doesn't need to drink to have a good time. Do you think I should politely ask my neighbors to leave the brew behind or am I butting in where I don't belong?

Temperance

Dear Temperance,

The evils of alcohol are well documented and you are right to be concerned for your children's interests. Here's the quandary: if you become a teetotaler for their sakes, when the two eventually reach drinking age you will be splitting your weekends between the drunk tank and detox facility.

The wisest choice is to encourage your children to drink as much alcohol as they'd like, whenever they'd like, at this ripe young age. That way by the time they finally reach those peer pressure years they will be so (to borrow an expression from AA) "sick and tired of being sick and tired" they will be the models of sobriety.

Your neighborhood will cheer you!

Dear Satan,

My son, "Phillipe," is 14. We have always been able to talk about everything. Yesterday I was shocked because he'd shaved his legs! I tried to remain calm. He says that all his friends are doing it and that the girls really like it.

His father sat down with him and told him that men do not shave their legs. My son says it is the fashion and that hairy legs are not "in."

Phillipe is a wonderful young man. People always tell me how lucky we are to have such a terrific son. Am I overreacting?

Worried in Pittsburgh

Dear Worried,

You have a right to be worried. Leg shaving, most assuredly, leads to harsher and more destructive behaviors. If your son is this hellbent pleasing his teenage cronies and the opposite sex, chances are quite high he'll end up "chasing the dragon" on the streets of New York City and trying to survive the bitterly cold winters of the northeast by leaning over heat grates and begging for food. Phillipe is in trouble and you and your husband are the only ones who can help.

My advice to you is to send the lad to the strictest military academy you can find. There he'll get access to the discipline he so desperately needs. Be sure you tell him that it is for his own good.

He may not thank you now. And he may hate you forever. But what can you do?

Leg shaving. Holy smokes.

Dear Satan,

I have a problem. I have a Sabre 402 with a new extendable whisker pole for the 130% genoa.

The pole is a forespar unit with internal extension line. A single ring is mounted chest high on the mast with 4 tapped machine screws. For offshore work and perfect safety, what is the recommended rigging procedure? Extra sheet? Fore and after guys?

Confused

Dear Confused,

You do not have a problem, you have an issue.

And that issue, my friend, is that you do not fish enough. You must sacrifice everything: your work, your children, and most especially your relationship with your wife, to figure out what is going on with this pole.

Dear Satan,

My mother's 60th birthday party is coming up and I want to get her something really special for the occasion. I want to go all out on this one, but I'm afraid I'll spend a fortune and end up with something she doesn't like. What would be an appropriate gift?

Unsure

Dear Unsure,

Since it is your mother, you need think of a very personal gift.

Something that lets her know how sick and tired you are of her non-stop criticism. Something that subtly delivers the message that you blame her for your incredibly low self-esteem. Something that asks the question, "Why did you give up on me?" Something under $200.

I know that's a pretty tall order, but a nice bottle of Antinori Solaia '00 (bright aromas of crushed berry and raspberry, full bodied with lovely tannins) spiked with arsenic would fit the bill.

-------------------

Until next week,

A Votre Maladie!

Satan

Satan shares more than 100 of his favorite recipes in two booklets: "Satan's Favorite Recipes" and "Don't Call it Gluttony, Call it Eating Well". Send a business-size, self-addressed envelope, plus check or money order for $10 (U.S. funds) to: Dear Satan -- Cookbook Set, P.O. Box 666, Galveston, TX 61054. (Postage is included in price.)

HOT TALENT

What do you do with a drunken sailor?

We've been asking ourselves that very question since the moment one showed up at our office at 8am.

We don't suggest coffee. We've given him three pots already and all it got us was an extremely jittery and awake drunken sailor.

So while we put in another DVD to keep him occupied (The Little Mermaid), why don't you sit back and haul in the bounty of our wonderful Aquent Talent?

Afterwards you can send your drunken sailor suggestions to tdonnelly@aquent.com.

Very Graphic News

240332325_7b4d018ca8.jpg

Lots of graphic related news this week.

Most surprisingly, for me anyway, Quark is showcasing its major upgrade, QuarkXPress 8. Called a change that brings the app "into the 21st century" according to Creative Pro the new interface makes it much easier to use.

Too late to save it from a takeover by InDesign? Time will tell.

Set to ship in the next two months, you can check out Gene Gable's first look (with screen shots) over here at the Creative Pro site.

Wouldn't you know, the other big news comes from Adobe.

Monday the graphics giant announced their major Acrobat upgrade, version 9, which includes "native support for Flash and other rich media plus new features for collaboration and sharing". They also launched Acrobat.com, which, according to their site, "is a set of online services — file sharing and storage, PDF converter, online word processor, and Web conferencing — you can use to create and share documents, communicate in real time, and simplify working with others." And it's free.

Yahoo News calls Buzzword, Adobe's online word processor, "A Google Docs Killer.

Also in Graphic News, Dick Sutcliff, creator of Claymation animated series Davey And Goliath passed away on May 25th.

I'm Tim Donnelly.

Good night and good news.

It's In The Can

121048480_5b690014a2.jpg

(From guest Blogger, Jenn Tran):

Dr. Fredric J. Baur, the genius that created the patent for the container for Pringles, passed away recently.

As part of his last wishes, he wanted his remains to be buried in a Pringles can.
He developed many products for Proctor & Gamble, including frying oils and a freeze-dried ice cream. He was said to have been proudest about the patent for the Pringles design.

I just hope that I can come up with something as cool before I die (it does not have to have the multi-usage, however.)

(Tim's note, Jenn's not joking about this, here's the AP article.)

Don't Drink The Water

RIVER_LR.jpg

As it may raise your cholesterol level and put you at risk for coronary heart disease.

I like beef, but I find these cliffs disturbing in a bad-modern-art way, which is probably not the intention of the Beef: It's What's for Dinner people.

When I look at these, I'm thinking "Beef: You're Soaking In It".

But that may just be me.

Check out more Beefscapes (yes, Beefscapes) here at their site.
