Reduce, Reuse, ReMac

You may (or may not) be surprised to learn I use a PC at home. (collective gasp)

Though a Mac user at work, I grew up with both and chose the cheaper option when buying a home computer (shut up, Lauren).

Sadly, my Windows 98 operating system doesn't seem to work as well as it did in, say, the year 1999. You remember the year 1999, don't you? Y2K, dial-up, the Web Boom, Doogie Howser. It seems a crime that it's actually cheaper to throw my computer out my window, pay to fix whatever car it hits, and buy a new computer than to actually have the old one fixed.

It's not sad in a way, as I'll get a brand new computer which will have 1,000 times the capacity of my old one and will run at 5 times the speed. Maybe I can even download family photos from the Internet. But what the heck do I do with the old one? My son's school would scoff at my outdated computer, as would the Goodwill.

Apple has actually come up with an interesting solution.

They're currently running a recycling program where you can have your old computer and monitor recycled free when you purchase any "qualifying" Apple computer or monitor. Even if you give them an old PC. And they make a promise not to throw it into the dumpster the minute you leave the store, nor send it to some far away country where they'll unpack it then immediately throw it into their dumpster.

I hope this works better than the time I took a bunch of dead PowerBook batteries to an Apple store only to have the employees scratch their heads and look at me as if I was asking for Steve Jobs' address. (I really thought I was being part of the solution for a moment. The batteries are still under my desk.)

You can also recycle your used iPod and they'll give you a 10% discount toward the purchase of a new iPod on the same day.

Or you can give your gently used iPod to Paul. I don't think he has one and he'd really appreciate it on the bus, I'm sure.

You use a PC at home?! Heathen!!!

But seriously, Apple's got a good marketing scheme going for them with the whole "recycling" program. Just what do they plan to do with all those old PCs though?

It's true, Greg. But now it's out there. Make of it what you will. Apple says it will be "environmentally friendly", so maybe that's bury it with the nuclear waste in the desert?

I'm working for a company that has been doing electronics recycling (www.etechrecycling.com) for 4 years now. We gets MACs as well as all type of electronics. I think Apple is doing a good thing for the humanity.

Well that's good to know! With all this e-waste proliferating, it's truly scary O.o And I don't care that you use a PC--I married a PC user, after all--I'm all about tolerance :)

shaimon - I think Apple is doing a great thing, too. I just checked out your site and your company looks very compelling. Since the life of a computer seems to be getting shorter and shorter all the time, I hope your company is thinking about expanding! Thought about Southern California?

Steph - I know what you mean about e-waste. I hate to see the figures that show we're dumping more into landfills now than when we were kids. Hey, we're going to run out of space someday, right? I'm glad you are so tolerant. I am, too, as I married a non-computer user.

Hey, you can sell your dead non-working batteries on eBay! I've sold two or three so far. There are people who refurbish them by replacing the cells.

Here's a link to one I recently sold:

eBay Item

Greg - that may be the most brilliant thing I've heard today. It is only 8:38a, but still, that's pretty amazing. Thanks!

Oh no, Tim. Don't do it!

Heather - See, I always knew you were a "company gal"! I'll tell your Supervisors they should be proud! (And, btw, the new Intel Macs can use Windows, so that's doubly good for everyone at Microsoft...)

Technically, I think it might be half as good, but I get your point. I'm not a PC gal because I work at Microsoft, I work at Microsoft because I'm a PC gal...or something like that.

I'm just happy you said "doubly" but it would have been doubly good if it was an actual Spinal Tap reference.

Heather - It's been Dolby noted.
